2022 GMC Hummer EV vs 2022 Tesla Cybertruck

2022 GMC Hummer EV vs 2022 Tesla Cybertruck

The electric vehicle revolution is finally coming to the pickup market, with most major truck manufacturers announcing EV models arriving in the near future. The GMC Hummer EV is one of the most eagerly awaited electric trucks in the pipeline, and to find out if it will live up to expectations we've compared it to the more headline-grabbing Tesla Cybertruck. Here's what we found.

Exterior and Styling

The biggest difference between these two trucks is immediately obvious from a single glance. The Tesla is built to a futuristic angular design that looks like nothing else outside a sci-fi movie. In contrast, the Hummer EV is a much more traditional design that won't attract quite so many inquiring looks. If you're looking for a classic, sturdy pickup profile to go with the electric power, then the Hummer EV is the obvious choice.

Huge Engine Power

Both of these electric trucks pack a huge punch under the hood. Although final specifications have yet to be released, the initial output figures give the Hummer EV a substantial lead in raw power. The Tesla's 800 horsepower rating is impressive, but is totally eclipsed by the GMC's 1,000 horsepower, a figure that's unrivalled in any segment outside the supercar arena.

The difference is even more startling when it comes to all-electric torque. While the Tesla is predicted to break the all-important 1,000lb-ft barrier, pitting it against the very best of today's gas or diesel trucks, the Hummer EV goes all out with an incredible predicted rating of 11,500lb-ft. However, it should be noted that GMC use the 'at axle' torque measurement which tends to give higher figures than the regular method. A more exact comparison will be possible once both trucks finally hit the market in their final forms.

Astonishing Acceleration

Both trucks are among the speediest vehicles available today, with acceleration times that outshine many sports coupes and other performance cars. The Tesla can race from 0-100kmh in just 2.9 seconds, thanks to the high horsepower and instant electric torque. The Hummer EV is a shade behind at 3 seconds, but considering the heft and capability of the larger body, that's still an astonishing performance level for a truck of any kind.

Electric Range

As standard, the Hummer EV can travel up to 560km on a full battery charge, comfortably ahead of the Tesla's estimated 400km. What's more, the Hummer is confirmed to be compatible with 350kW DC fast charging facilities, which can add over 150km of range in around ten minutes.

Hummer EV vs Cyber Truck: The Verdict

Both of these trucks take the segment to a new level of power and performance, delivering huge speed and capability with the economy of electric powertrains. Both pickups will make capable working partners that can handle any task you ask of them, but if you're looking for a traditional pickup design that won't attract too much unwanted attention, the Hummer EV is the clear winner.
