2022 Chevy Malibu: What's New
The 2022 Malibu model is largely unchanged from the previous model, retaining the strong blend of great performance and family-friendly sedan comfort. However, two new paint colours have been added to widen the car's styling options.
Choice of Powertrains
For 2022, the Chevy Malibu is available with two engine choices. Most models from the entry level upward are built around a 1.5L four-cylinder engine which pushes 163 horsepower and 184lb-ft of torque through a continuously variable transmission (CVT) to front-wheel drive. This configuration offers classic sedan performance, with dependable acceleration and straight-line speeds which always feel under control and with plenty in reserve.
However, moving up to the highest Premier trim ups the performance ante with a 2.0L turbocharged mill making a superior 250 horsepower and 260lb-ft. This extra output is delivered to front-wheel drive through an enhanced nine-speed automatic transmission, taking the Malibu to a new level of performance.
Fuel Economy
One of the advantages of the sedan format is the frugal fuel consumption in comparison to oversized, overpowered SUVs. The standard engine supplies great economy figures of 8.1L / 100km in the city and 6.5L on the highway, to give an overall rating of 7.35L combined. As you'd expect, the 2.0L turbo engine is thirstier, but the combined rating of 9.0L is still highly respectable for a sedan with such a high power output.
Interior and Technology
The Malibu's interior is comfortable, well designed, and deceptively spacious for a mid-size sedan. And while both passenger space and cargo capacity are generous, the highlight of the interior is the infotainment system which runs the excellent Chevrolet software behind a clear and crisp 8" touchscreen display.
Standard features including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot facility are easy to access using the thoughtfully designed menu, while higher-level options including navigation and wireless charging are available as upgrades.
Available Active Safety Systems
The 2022 Malibu provides a generous set of safety systems available through the various trims and technology upgrade packages. Key highlights include forward collision warnings with pedestrian detection, forward emergency braking automation, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, a following distance indicator, and fully automatic high beams. At the top end of the range there's also optional adaptive cruise control which comes with enhanced and expanded forward emergency braking systems.
